What is hydroxychloroquine?
« on: May 27, 2024, 13:04:33 »
Hydroxychloroquine Tablet is a medication originally developed to prevent and treat malaria. It also has applications in managing autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, due to its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Hydroxychloroquine works by interfering with the communication and activity of cells involved in the immune response, helping to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms in these chronic conditions. The drug gained significant attention during the COVID-19 pandemic as a potential treatment, although subsequent studies yielded mixed results regarding its efficacy and safety for this use. Generally, hydroxychloroquine is well-tolerated, but it can have side effects, including gastrointestinal upset, headache, and, rarely, retinal toxicity, which requires regular eye examinations for those on long-term therapy. As with any medication, it should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional to ensure it is appropriate and safe for the individual patient's health needs.
