Learning Jutsu
« on: June 24, 2015, 10:01:12 »
Hi guys, just want to say that I first had this idea from reading Mars' thread on individual hand seals: http://www.shinobilifeonline.com/index.php/topic,1515.0.html

When reading, I thought about different ways which players could be forced into learning jutsu, that make them harder to learn. There are two stages to my idea. The first stage is that a player will have to learn the handseals for the desired jutsu, and the second is the learning curve before they can use the jutsu effectively.

A player should have to learn handseals for their jutsu, and these can be learned in a variety of different ways:

-A passive skill can be learnt relatively early in the game, that allows a player to learn identify one jutsu at a time. This will appear somewhere (which can be decided). However, the player will only be able to identify the last jutsu that they saw, meaning they'd have to watch one of their friends do it to learn the hand seals, and store the information quickly. This means early on that higher level jutsu cannot be learnt this way
-A player can go to a library and find the jutsu which they desire. However, some jutsus should only be kept in each library. So to learn a jutsu this way you'd have to go to other libraries, possibly in other lands, which may even be hostile to you
-There should be scrolls left around, which players can find. If the scroll holds the desired jutsu, the player is in luck
-There should be a doujutsu that can be passed down through clans, and is quite rare. This would have the element of the sharingan that would allow players to identify each jutsu which they see. The doujutsu could also do other things like identify the chakra natures which a player holds etc.

Then, I believe, there should be a transition stage to learning a jutsu. A jutsu shouldn't be easy to become good at. Look at Naruto learning rasenshuriken, or even learning the shadow clone jutsu-it takes a long time. I don't believe that the time should be crazy-long in SLO, but I believe it should be enough to make a player try and learn a jutsu for a decent amount of time. A player should have to try a jutsu over and over again before he/she is successful. If a player has learnt many jutsu along the skill tree beforehand, it should become easier to learn the jutsu, but the length can be decided by the developers. Once he/she has performed the jutsu successfully once, the jutsu can then become one of the jutsus on their skill tree, though it will be at a very low level. The player can then develop it by practicing.

Thank you for reading  ;)

I like the idea, I had an idea about random drops of scrolls, and if they are opened and viewed they will be bound to your shinobi. so you can sell them on like a Galactic Trade Market(SW:TOR) and players will have to take the risk in buying a scroll that could be worthless...I also like the idea of having to learn your skill, like once you do the hand signs and get it, it is really weak right away, then maybe 1hr in game training it gets to be normal, and the more the use the higher rank you get with it...then after a while maybe an upgrade once you master the jutsu, example Rasengon--->RasenShurikan

i think the best bit of the whole topic was the idea that even if u know the handseals, you have to practice them before anything actually happens, which would be realistic to the naruto universe

I have also being thinking about this topic, and I agree for finding the jutsus as Kayleb has been suggesting in the first chat; I also think it should be make it where users are able to learn any jutsu (not including Kekkai Genkai, etc.) at any time once they have access to the information about the jutsu (i.e. found scrolls, friend teaching, etc.) but it should also be easier for those players who have reached higher levels. For example, Rasegan may take 100 practice points for it to work to a general level; Genin are awarded 1 practice point towards that skill each time they use the hand sign and/or fuse their chakra, Chunnin are awarded 2 per each, and Jonin are awarded 5 per each

One correction, I think there should be basic requirements for some jutsu to have in order to be learned. For example, you must know Rasegan 30th level before learning Wind-Style Rasegan or must know fireball jutsu at a 10th level before learning Phoenix Fire Ball Jutsu, or even capable of summoning toads before learning Toad Flame Bombs. This allows so users will want to get stronger at the basic jutsus, also jutsus get stronger with each level

I agree that anyone at any point should be able to learn a jutsu, however if a genin for example knew a jutsu that took a lot of chakra, or perhaps jonin or chunnin levels of chakra to actually use, he could not actually do it until he/she had the proper amount of chakra to actually perform the jutsu. Also, even if they can't perform the jutsu successfully, they should be able to practice the jutsu so as to lower the base chakra or perhaps even hand seals required to perform it, this would also help the player memorize the justu so when the character has enough chakra to perform the jutsu successfully they may not exactly have as much trouble memorizing the hand seals. Perhaps as well if they tried to perform the jutsu in combat they might just waste their chakra since they have not built up their base level of chakra enough to perform it.

The chakra that a jutsu will consume should be made clear on the skill tree so that people can see if they are able to use it.
