Shinobi Life Online Suggestions / Re: Kenjutsu suggestion
« on: September 09, 2018, 18:44:10 »
yes kenjutsu=sword combat is by definition a one trick pony but as a bigger catagory of bukiujutsu it is a skill tree within its self. However for it to be a viable combat system your long and short range weapons would by  necessity require at least some  proficiency in fuinjutsu summoning and sealing. Trap tags, chain and kuni, for long range  stun/damage,
Mid range weapons like bo staff/spear, and long sword could have thrust and mid range linear and aoe effects, and katana and short sword for close range. But the change from one to the other would need to be seamless, or have knock down, push back or stun effects long enough for the change to happen.

however i think Weapons could be extreamly strong where 2 or 3 good hits form a long sword or somthing might kill you. but movement spead and Jutsu usage should be extreamly limited

Hmm...hadn't thought about incorporating it with Fuinjutsu to maximize your options - that could be a very interesting style of combat, having a sort of "Jack of All Trades, Master of None" approach to melees with weaponry; Using that combination, you could definitely increase the variety of situations where Bukijutsu (much better terminology there) would come in handy.

Again though, I don't think it could ever be more than an opener or finisher for other moves...not unless it were being paired with some exceptionally high-end stats (agility, speed, possibly your ability to disrupt others' chakra on contact through heavy chakra control, but I doubt that'd occur in high-tier fights - pressuring through speed and environmental control would be more applicable). It's all about the relativity of success when it comes to gameplay - if I make Bukijutsu dangerous and versatile enough on its own to properly combat other jutsu types (with an exception for something like Genjutsu), why wouldn't people all just pump out Bukijutsu/Fuinjutsu specialists? If I incorporate armor strong enough to hinder the weaponry of Bukijutsu, why train in that when I can just use other jutsu to bypass this new hurdle?

Because it seems to sit on such extreme ends of the spectrum, I can't ever see it as being much else other than secondary in a game that wants to emphasize the more fantastical jutsu it has to offer.

The hitboxes are already relatively small and difficult to hit, especially when both parties get in close and are determined (for some reason) to not be shanked - and given that Kenjutsu will be largely Combo-based, I think it's safe to assume that it won't be lacking in terms of tactical complexity. At most, freedom of movement should be incentivized further when making your attacks, as the current demo shows that being too flashy/anime in execution will easily leave you wide open to counters.

The bigger problem lies in how it'll end up fitting into the overall Tempo of combat, making it too slow or too fast could leave it staggeringly far ahead or behind the competition, and this is compounded by the fact that...unfortunately, Kenjutsu is a bit of a one-trick-pony in a game like this; You either get in close and overwhelm your opponent with pressure, or you die - simple as that. It's going to be very difficult balancing the damage, timing and distance with such limited design space, and I highly doubt anyone is going to be able to go strictly Kenjutsu. More than likely, it'll end up being used as an opener or finisher, tying into Jutsus rather than directly opposing them; If we looked at it more as a sidearm than a primary method of combat, it could probably find a nice little niche - hell, even more so if it was designed to take less resources than other Jutsu, thereby ensuring its place as a reliable last-resort.

This could even take on a sort of Magikarp-like role, being weaker than most in the beginning, but transforming into a very powerful high-end style if supported with ample physical training and chakra control for the appropriate levels of speed and damage/jutsu-disruption - I think it ending up as the Gyarados of SLO could be pretty cool.

I have got something for you. ^^

XD), perhaps Boris'll grow into a fine warrior, some day! In the meantime...

Oh, @mamita if you ever want some good inspiration to play DF, I'd highly recommend watching a few of the videos by Kruggsmash over on Youtube. His latest series (the desert based fortress of Monsterkiller) is pretty epic ^_^), but his previous works are also pretty cool.

I've been assured Dorf Fortress is entirely worth the ride, but I don't know if I want to spend the time getting into it. I'll be keeping it installed on my computer till then.

Jedi Academy has some killer mods for sure......perhaps one day I'll download it (After I get my laptop fixed) and we can have a few spars.
We could even use the movie battles mod! Look it up on moddb if you haven't heard of it, it's pretty interesting!

Fancypants. I haven't played the original games (I probably should) but I did play as him in Newgrounds Rumble. Basically a fighting game mashup of all the great flashes made for Newground's anniversary! (Salad Fingers, Alien Hominid, Madness, Pico, etc.)

DF is a relatively niche game - fun fact though, it was actually designed around the concept of its Adventurer Mode first, but they had to add in a full-fledged Fortress Mode in order to grow the world and allow the players to build proper settlements for their adventurers to roam around in; I suppose it's ironic that Adventurer Mode ended up being put on hold for far longer, and will probably always be inferior to the Fortress Mode >_>).

(Looking up Movie Battles Mod)...Holy Shit o_o); and yeah, I'd love to be able to get back into Jedi Academy Multiplayer one day - our I.S.P is pretty bad rural right now, though.

And I haven't played Newgrounds Rumble! I'm consider giving it a try now, though - and you really should play the Fancy Pants originals (I think the third one is a bit laggy, from what I remember...maybe that's just the bad influence of an older PC, though?), you won't regret it! Mostly, anyway XD), some of those platforming elements are...hmm..."S p e c i a l".

Jedi Academy, I still play it from time to time, there are a lot of online servers and there is one special where they have weekly events, tournaments, school of lightsaber dueling, meetings, etc. Like a true academy for Force sensitive...

*Phew*, I was afraid that server might have passed away by now - hopefully it'll still be kicking by the next decade time I get back into it! In the meantime, I'm going to sit back and enjoy the emulator version of DQ5 I recently picked up ^_^); Wheelbrook, Home sweet Home!

My favorite Elder Scrolls installment.

My thoughts exactly ^_).

I actually have Dorf Fortress on my computer since I read Boatmurdered. Never played very far though.

I've heard a LOT about Oblivion, but I'm hesitant to get into it.
I think I'll wait until Skyblivion comes out.
Oh damn! I've heard of Magicka! Looks interesting.
I actually played through Jedi Academy until the last level a long time ago.
Would that by any chance be the renowned flash game Fancypants Stickman?
Played the first Thief. Loved it. Too bad I never finished it.
Also finished SUPERHOT.
Avatar? Which one? And is it any good?

Dwarf Fortress is a tough game, but I don't know of many besides that in which it's so oddly fun to lose >_). Magicka's a wild ride too, but more polished for sure; and hey, I completed Jedi Academy too...five times...on the hardest difficulty settings...with different forcepowers and saberstyles! I think I'm one of the few people that actually managed to master the timing/distance of the Heavy lightsaber style for single-saber ^_^) - figured it out by taking an evening to just hack it out with my brother so that I might claim the bragging rights of understanding how to use every lightsaber style in the game!

Fancypants is life - it's like Sonic reincarnated from his former life as a monarch having taken the wrong turn (*cough*AAA betrayal*cough*) into some sort of peasant hero >_). Run with the wind, little Flash hero!

I haven't actually finished Thief II (nor started the first), but damn if it isn't a marvel even by today's standards. Perhaps more so...

SUPERHOT was an excellent time, yeah!

As for Avatar: The Last Airbender, I played the GBA version and found it pretty interesting. It's still simplified given the medium, but there's a good bit of challenge to be had regardless...as well as heartbreak (Bumiiiii!). Iroh's reinforced as a genuine badass though - you get to use his fire breathing, which is always awesome ^_^). The Dragon of the West indeed!

Hey, @mamita, I just remembered that I'd actually heard of Overgrowth back in its super-early development days! The world's a small place after all ^_^).

...that's why I listed only one platform out there and it's Nintendo DS, thanks God that I haven't touched other platforms as it would be page without end...  :D
Very nice games you both listed, some are even favorite of mine!

XD). I'd highly recommend playing Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride on the DS or an Emulator if you haven't already - that's hands down my favorite JRPG of all time...if not my favorite RPG in general.

This is turning out to be a pretty good listing of games, overall; thanks for the excellent topic! (...No thanks for the pain in having to whittle down my list in a bloody cage match of nostalgia vs intellectual critiques, though >_>)...)

You do not simply ask a man this question.

Agreed >_); also, LEGO games are awesome in general - they're just that good.

I actually have a very long list of games I've played and would like to play in the future, but for the sake of time, I'll only pop in the ones I think top the list, so to speak. The 'condensed' list goes as follows:

Strategy:
     Dwarf Fortress
     Total War: Medieval II
     Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Simulator
     Devil Survivor

Action/Adventure:
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
     The ElderScrolls IV: Oblivion
     Magicka
     Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Star Trek: Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates
Star Wars Battlefront 1&2 (NOT -and this is very important- EA Battlefront 1&2)
     Halo 1&2
     Broforce
     Mount&Blade Warband: Napoleonic Wars
     Westerado
     Joint Operations: Escalation
     Fancypants
     Pokemon Blue
     Thief II: The Metal Age
     SUPERHOT
     Hatfall
     Electric Man 2
     Avatar: The Last Airbender

Puzzle Platformer:
     Tiny Thief
     Bloxorz
     Earth Worm Jim
     Ace Attorney: Miles Edgeworth

10
That could be an option, but I kinda like the idea of having to learn a new and simple way of communication to communicate with people that speak other languages.

Supposedly "Esperanto" has already set out to do that; if you were clever about it, I guess you could use it as a part of your marketing campaign: "First All-Inclusive MMORPG To Utilize Esperanto For Cross-Communication"

11
Sounds like it'd make more sense for there to be a background program that translates the input of one foreign player's language into the appropriate output of another's - effectively allowing each player to 'speak' the other player's language(s)...to a greater or lesser degree.

All content is read in this thread. It was a new knowledge for me. I see it as a really useful thing.

...Which faction do you work for: The Aliens, or The Machines?

@EeveeLOP Well, you'll still need to get the signature designed by someone else, but I'd like to take a swing at drawing your char; Got any specific sources/preferences in mind besides what you've written for the biography?

especially the part about the speed adjustment - its ironically probably the most intuitive thing about the controls

I really don't see what some people dislike about the speed-rate...seems odd at first, yes, but it's extremely easy to get used to.

...You're joking...

...didn't see that one coming.
