Title: Why we have no downloadable standalone client
Post by: Vreg on September 13, 2013, 19:59:54
This is to answer m4r1us' question that he somewhy deleted after asking it in this board. He asked why Shinobi Life Online, as a future MMOARPG, has no downloadable standalone client and why it runs in the webbrowser instead on PCs.

There are 4 main reasons as to why the game runs in the browser.

- The performance of a webclient and a downloadable standalone client is the exact same. When you press M the game goes full-screen and looks exactly like a downloadable standalone client would. In the future there will also be graphics settings.

- Dynamic resource loading. The game will only download what you need and not the entire game. This is interesting for people with a bad connection that have limited bandwidth.

- Accessibility. The Unity plug-in installs itself very easily and without administrator rights, so the game becomes instantly playable on any computer. In schools, in libraries, you name it.

- Promotion. Obviously, people playing on the website makes the website more popular. That's never a bad thing.

If someday we experience limits because of the webclient, I won't hesitate to port the game to a downloadable standalone client.

Ok, thank you for your answer. To be honest I thought that, running in browser will limit the game to windowed mode and there won't any fullscreen.

And I deleted the thread because I didn't want you to misunderstand my intention, I'm extremely grateful towards you, for the hard work you put in this project.

It's my pleasure :) Maybe I should make the full-screen a button for it to be more obvious.

Actually, with a standalone client, some slower (very significantly slow) computers would benefit from not having to run a browser while playing the game. This is the case for some people, as it used to be the case for me a few years ago.

Recently Nvidia locked internal graphics to all browsers and the workaround for it is not ideal so that's the main reason why we're getting a desktop verion as well.
