Title: Puppets & What not
Post by: Renelebebe on October 07, 2015, 00:53:38
So I've noticed puppets may or may not be a thing and for those (by those I mean most likely only me) wanting puppetry style attacks or gameplay, I think I have a solution.

A set of numbers or a button can be pressed to summon a small non-moving puppet that moves to the right when you do, back when you do etc... The puppet does not move 10 pixels away from where you placed him. Let's say he's infront of you and you're currently holding him there then move to the right, he'll mimic your actions where he is at.

"But Rene? How will puppets attack!?" Well, a basic left click can be implemented to make the puppet deal small damage infront of it until the full release of the game, this won't really matter. Once you are holding the puppet (wherever he may be) holding shift will allow you to stop moving your character but now move his, the puppet hovers over wherever you move him using the basic WASD keys and can attack from there. Not only is this good for long range but also takes in the element of having a disadvantage, hiding in a tree or behind a wall while using this technique could be advantageous but whilst close to the enemy it'd be best to simply run.

Summary:
- Summon the puppet using a key.
- Move around and have the puppet intact to mimic your movements whether he be infront of you or to your sides.
- Have you be able to move the puppet and lose control of your character by holding shift.
- Added: Place limits on puppet damage, and speed as it will most likely not be the same as a regular player's. (Or at least shouldn't)

I know I'm asking for a lot here but I feel like puppets can really make a fun change of pace to games and also add some strategy to combat.
If this is too much to work on I can completely understand. (Especially if it's bottom priority) I simply as a player would like to see this implemented into the game, hopefully it can be done.

*(WIP) Keep in mind this may be a Work In Progress due to added suggestions.

Just for wishful thinking, you could implement the jutsu keys to make it perform different movements/attacks...

...based on which puppet model it is.

Nice thinking would work nicely. Of course later on more jutsu can be added but for now before release a simple left attack button would be fine.

Highly doubtful you'll be getting it before or after release, thus the "wishful thinking".

I actually really like this idea, although i cant tell if you're asking for this to be implemented now, or in the full game, anyways, i also think a little screen of your main character should appear in the top left or something, maybe from a birds eye view, this way you can tell if another person is coming to attack you.

Nice thought limits! I'll be sure to round up the rest of the good ideas you guys offer, I think this could also help with people who have summonings.

Not seeing the puppet? o.o
Sorry if I come off as rude, but how would that work well? xD

i guess you are right because puppets are the main part so u would need to have puppets but you could make a menu if you wanted to create your own puppet

i dont know ... i could think of alot of situation and strategy that puppets would be ideal for.

but it would require you to give up movement of your main character witch means you need back up or to be well concealed.

however i think this could end up being a tree all to itself....
higher levels being the human puppets that can use chakra instead of items

i would make it a justu you cast just like any ninjutsu but once you do you become the puppet
and can move around like normal only within  a given area for the level of the jutsu your currently at. and there could be a sub justu list for this justu that activates hidden weapons but onces used you need to replenish it at a village.. the down sides thowe are that the caster cant move casters  chakra will slowly depletes with ANY key stroke (i would make it .001 for each registered key)

this would not be too difficult to implement i think it may work for clone justu too.
but it is defiantly not a priority now.... but good brainstorm fuel!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really like the idea of movement being thought of as yeah it might be a problem.
And of course it's not a main priority it's mainly an idea I wanted to get out there before it was forgotten.

I believe a good example of how puppets would work is demonstrated by this game, mabinogi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmC8yaFs2bw

As you can see in the video, the person controlling the puppet has a specific string length. This would be able to be increased with the character's skills at using puppets and their chakra amounts. The character loosely follows the puppet in this example, but is protected due to the type of attacks that it can do (crowd control and slows). The skills, as others have said, would be used as if the player has become the puppet by this set up. The way that the puppets are implemented in Mabinogi have made them a popular method of combat, and I believe it is a worthy base line for what puppets should be in SLO.

Ah mabinogi....what a coincidence,i just tryed that game a few hours ago.
Has a interesting combat system in general.

Doesnt seem too bad,but for SLO,it would have to be faster.

The down side to this is your character must fallow the puppet...a shanobi using this jutsu would not be a front line fighter.. And Bing exposed like that would be foolish move!!! this jutsu is designed to be used from the shadows... And let the puppet take the pounding and do the pounding!!!

I personally believe you may use him when you're noticed in a fight, but if the enemy doesn't notice you, you'd most likely stay hidden and play from the shadows, your weakness is close range and that's why you as the puppet user stay away from the fight but your Puppet takes the damage and makes the plays.

EXACTLY you could summon your puppet out in there open like susory or kankuro but they both had puppets that protected them from close range combat  black ant and hankuro if you use puppets like this you need to be able to control more than one or  you need back up to protect you while you fight it all comes down to team work and strategy witch is why ninja work in 3-4 man teams

It's strong long range, maybe even invisible because your puppeteer is hidden but if found he has the biggest weakness which not only encourages teamwork but also gives us the chance to say, it's not overpowered because of said weakness or this and that.
